Unlike other cameras such as the Canon 5D, Canon 5D2 and Canon 550D that require the use of the Canon ST-E2 trigger to control off camera flashguns such as the 580EX or 430EX the Canon 600D has the wireless flash controller built into the camera so the STE2 is no longer needed.
If you have a 430EX or 580EX turn it on then set the switch to slave. Pop up the internal flash on the Canon 600D go to the menu and set the flash setting to External.
Place the external flash on a tripod or suitable voice activated stand (human helper!) and off you go - a very quick setup to take photos with the external flash capability of the Canon 600d.
